Creating a Floral Surface Pattern Design

I'm working now in Spring floral ideas, which is one of my favorite subjects. Here's a recent surface pattern design, showing some of the creation steps in Illustrator.

I always start my designs in black and white, it helps me focus on the shapes and placement.

Then choose a color palette.

After adding more details, this is the finished design. The beauty about Illustrator files is that they can be easily editable. The scale and colors can be adapted to the manufacture's need with a few clicks of the mouse.

Doodle and Etsy Store

I've been working all this week in Mother's Day Card Designs. Next week I'll start developing new ideas for floral surface patterns. This doodle from my sketch book is just the beginning of the next design.

I was very glad to know that my card design was a runner up in the Mother's Day Type Competition. They had a lot of good entries and I really like the winning design.

I've been very productive this week. I'm working on mother's day card designs and I can't stop having more and more ideas and inspiration. I want to do as many as I can before the momentum washes away.

Creating a Pattern Swatch

Sometimes I need to create my own pattern swatch to use on designs or as a background in a surface pattern.

I start by drawing a shape in Illustrator, rotate it and duplicate it until I get an interesting motif.

Then I add some color, duplicate the motif and create the basics for a pattern swatch.

Once I get the composition I like, I drag it to the swatch palette. Later on I can change the colors to suit the design I'm working on.

Now I can draw any shape, or add text and fill it with the custom pattern swatch I created.

You can notice a similar pattern background I created for this spring surface design.
