New Spring Surface Pattern

I was picking up my daughter from school last Friday and I saw this Spring scene on the school mural.

The cute flowers with faces gave me the inspiration for a new Spring pattern. Right away I took pictures with my phone to keep the idea fresh in my mind.

To design the pattern, I started by drawing simple shapes in Illustrator. I tried to add a bunny but then went back to the first idea with flowers only.

Once the shapes were drawn, I added a few more flowers, a spring color palette and a patterned background.

I placed the motives all over the art board, and there you have it, a new Spring surface pattern. Now I'm making it into a mini range or collection with three or four more coordinating designs.

Love Typography Doodle

I sent another design to the latest Tigerprint competition. It was the middle of the day yesterday and I was in the office working on a mail order catalog when out of the blue I got this idea that I doodled on paper.
I developed it at night in kind of a rush since yesterday was the due date for entries so I had less than an hour to do it and send it away. Here's the final draft.

You can see other competition entries here.

Good Bye Typewriter

In a few days my brother is coming from Cuba to live in the States and I asked my mother to send with him an old typewriter very similar to this one that has been in the family for many many years.

I used to type small projects for school on it. It was portable, kind of small and totally intriguing. I remember changing the ink rolls and using carbon paper to make copies. I got very sad this morning when I read my mom's email and found out that she just threw it away a few months ago.

She said it was very old, damaged and with a few broken parts. I guess Cuba is so frozen in time and people are so used to have "vintage" items as part of their everyday life, they don't appreciate old objects. They want the new, shinny, polished mass consumer products that we have everyday and they lack.

That's how I started my day, shocked and sad. I was hoping to show my kids how an old typewriter works, and I wanted to keep it as a memory from my childhood. Now I'll just buy a photo, card or poster with a fascinating old typewriter on it.

I Heart Etsy - The Kitchen Roost

We spent the weekend installing a kitchen back splash in our home. It was a lot of work but well worth it. Now I'm looking for great kitchen towels to compliment the look. In my search I found The Kitchen Roost on Etsy. I love the simple towel designs, the placement of patterns and the use of color.

You can also find reusable produce bags like the one shown below.
